La shell di Python serve proprio a scrivere i comandi errati, in modo da
scriverli poi giusti nel codice. Sbagliando s'impara! :-)

Editor ce n'è tanti, sul freeware non saprei, l'ho abbandonato molti anni
fa, preferendogli il Free Software (tutt'altra cosa).

Nella distribuzione per Windows dovrebbe essere compreso IDLE, che non è
malaccio (non sono sicuro, non uso neanche Windows da molto).

Se non usi Windows scusami, ma di solito chi non lo specifica usa quello. :-)
